WHAT LEVEL SKATER AM I?

LEVEL 1: BEGINNER 

LEVEL 2: PROGRESSOR

DEFINING YOUR LEVEL WITH THE HOUSE OF SKATE

Many of our skate coaching programs are grouped and categorised by ability, therefore it's important to categorise yourself correctly to make sure you're in the right group.

Use the definitions below to help identify what level you are.

*If you're on the cusp - in between two levels - we recommend you categorise yourself at the lower level.



LEVEL 1: BEGINNER

You are a level 1 skater if:

  • You've never skated before.
  • Only skated a handful of times.
  • You skate exclusively on the flat concrete.
  • Struggle to get to place both your feet on the board consistently.
  • Need assistance to master the basics: Pushing, foot placement and maintaining your balance.


GOALS FOR THE BEGINNER SKATER

  • Build confidence.
  • Master the basics.
  • Learn how to avoid skating mongo - and push the right way.
  • Frontside and backside turning.
  • Learn how to master your first trick.
  • Tic-tacking and speed generation.

LEVEL 2: PROGRESSOR

You are a level 2 skater if:

  • You feel comfortable and balanced pushing and riding unassisted.
  • Attempting to roll-in to light incline ramps.
  • You're beginning to migrate away from the flatland, into the transitions of the skatepark.


GOALS FOR THE PROGRESSOR SURFER

  • Learn to roll into ramp transitions.
  • Learn how to rock-to-fakie.
  • Begin to master transitions and pump the bowl.
  • Learn the fundamentals of how to ollie - the right way.
  • Learn how to go on, up, and off curbs.

LEVEL 3: IMPROVER

You are a level 3 skater if:

  • You're either dropping-in already, or ready to start dropping-in to the ramps.
  • Feel comfortable navigating your way around the skateparks.
  • You can do small ollies, and you're looking to move into more advanced manoeuvres like 180's and shuv-its.
  • You can navigate around the bowl, and gain speed riding up and over transitions.


GOALS FOR THE IMPROVER SKATER

  • Build confidence to drop into the big bowl.
  • Bigger, better, higher ollies.
  • Early-grabs, and no-grab exits out of the quarter pipe.
  • Different grabs out of the ramps.
  • Small acid drops.

LEVEL 4: ACADEMY 

You are a level 4 skater if:

  • You feel totally comfortable dropping-in to the quarter pipe, and the bowl.
  • You're in control doing different grabs and rotations out of the ramps.
  • You're able to do 180's.
  • You've completely mastered the basics, feel at home riding your board, feel fully confident in the skatepark, and are looking to take on more complex tricks.


GOALS FOR THE ACADEMY SKATER

  • Bigger, faster, more extreme airs.
  • 50/50 grinds
  • Master different grabs: indie, stalefish, melon, benihana, etc. 
  • Ollie's off steps.
  • Much more.
